  • Nakuru Police Station witnessed frantic scenes on Wednesday, September 16, as legislators allied to detained Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi were denied entry into the premises.

Nakuru Senator Susan Kihika, her Elgeyo Marakwet counterpart Kipchumba Murkomen and Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa were among the contingent of legislators blocked at the gate.

A huge crowd had gathered behind them as they tried to argue their way in. However, the armed guards remained adamant, making it clear that they were acting under strict orders.

“Orders from who?” a visibly incensed Murkomen asked”. “Those are the orders we have. No entry. We are members of the disciplined forces and we follow orders,” one of the officers responded.

The Senator then informed the officers that blocking legal counsel from seeing Sudi was illegal.

Moments later, Uasin Gishu Woman Representative Gladys Shollei, who is part of Sudi’s legal team, made her way to the gate and argued some more to have her colleagues allowed into the station.

“From the moment you decided to try him (Sudi) from this station, it immediately turned into a court. meaning you have no right to deny them entry,” she argued.

She then made it clear that she was going to take the matter up with the County Commissioner.

At this point, hundreds of people who had gathered outside the station were become rowdy by the minute.

It was only until later that the officers budged, and opened the gate, allowing all the legislators camped outside into the station.

Earlier in the day, Nakuru Law Courts Chief Magistrate Josephat Kalo, ruled out an application by the prosecution to detain Sudi for 14 days.

However, the Magistrate went on to direct that the MP remain in police custody for 7 more days pending completion of investigations.

Sudi was charged with hate speech, offensive conduct, resisting arrest, being in unlawful possession of a firearm and assault of a police officer.
