Speaking to journalists during the protest, the Jubilee legislator stated that the government official had refused to grant a family a permit to bury their loved one, in Kimunyu area, over a bribe.
“The body was supposed to have been buried on Thursday but now it has been two days. The chief must be fired, arrested, and arraigned in court over corruption,” the MP stated.
He lauded the residents for not paying more money to the chief so as to have the burial permit released.
“If it were anywhere else, locals would have come together and held a harambee to get the money, but here they decided to protest and that is good. We shall not allow any cover-ups,” Kuria added.
A resident who spoke to NTV stated that the residents raised the initial Ksh1,000 amount asked by the chief but, she later asked for an additional Ksh 500 at which point they denied.
“When we were unable to raise the extra money, we took the body to her office and she had police officers take the body away,” a resident explained.
The legislator stated that the cause of death of the local was not established, ” It could have been Covid-19.”
In a press briefing on May 19, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe noted that 15 (30%) of the total 50 Covid-19 deaths registered in the country at the time, were patients who had died at home without any treatment.
Kagwe explained that if a victim died at home, the rate of infection and that of mortality would be higher in the affected area.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Dr. Edwin Gitu a medical practitioner at the Aga Khan Hospital explained that staying with a Covid-19 patient at home was not advisable as the patient would completely depend on the caregiver.
“It is, therefore, unwise to try this level of care at home because adequate protection cannot be guaranteed.
“Secretions from the mouth and nose and the face area of the deceased also harbor the virus and can be infective if one touches them then their own face,” he told our newsdesk on the phone.
