  • Alphonse*, a four-year-old boy in Mombasa is seeking help to raise Ksh. 50,000 fine to have their mum who was sentenced to serve six months in jail following a fight released.

His mother Pauline Atieno was sentenced to serve jail term in July for assaulting her neighbour. Atieno and the neighbour are said to have fought after their sons, one of them being Alphonse*, engaged in a fight while playing.

Alphonse* is reported to have fought with his playmate after pouring water on him as the friend resorted to running to call his mother.

It was then that a physical confrontation ensued between Atieno and the neighbour, leading to a fight breaking out between the two mothers.

The court heard that Atieno bit the neighbour’s finger during the fight, something that landed her the sentence after she was reported to the police.

Speaking to, Kevin Okanja, Alphonse’s father confirmed that indeed his wife was in custody following a fight, adding that he had tried to sort the matter out of court to no avail.

“They attacked my wife, and that’s when she bit the neighbour’s finger in retaliation,” he explained.

Kevin stated that he even offered his TV, gas and woofer as part of the settlement, but the child’s mother refused and instead asked for Ksh. 150,000.

Pauline was sentenced to six-months in jail, or pay Ksh. 50,000 fine to gain her freedom.

Kevin is, however, in a dire financial situation as his welding business suffered after the Covid-19 pandemic hit the country.

Pauline was arrested on Thursday, July 16, and has served almost two months in prison with the husband detailing how his other son almost burned down their house while cooking.

“The boy almost burned down the house while preparing tea, they forgot to check on the tea. I found the sufuria red hot with the gas still on.

“The incident leaked to the landlord who was not very impressed. Meanwhile, I am ill and the boys keep asking me about their mum,” he added.

Kevin hoped he could get contacts to philosophic politicians such as Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko and Deputy President William Ruto if only they could lend a helping hand.
