Former Agriculture CS Mwangi Kiunjuri, on September 14, let slip 5 names that would be considered as Deputy President William Ruto’s running mates in the 2022 General Elections.
Speaking during an interview on a vernacular station, Kiunjuri fronted himself, and MPs Moses Kuria (Gatundu South), Ndindi Nyoro (Kiharu) and Kimani Ichungwa (Kikuyu).
A day earlier, he also revealed that he would be willing to back former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo as the DP’s running mate, if that is what the people demanded.
“If we went to the Mt. Kenya region and the people demanded for a Ruto-Kabogo ticket, I will loyally back them during the elections,” he stated.
However, speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Director of Communications at DP Ruto’s office Emmanuel Talam revealed that he was not in a position to confirm or deny the authenticity of the list as he was yet to transcribe the interview for review.
Kiunjuri addressed recent rumours regarding his bid to become the country’s second in command in a William Ruto government, maintaining that he was there to serve the will of the people.
“There have been rumours that I will contest as DP Ruto’s running mate in the forthcoming election. I have never made such a pronouncement but if I happen to be blessed to become one, nothing and nobody can be against the will of God [sic],” he stated
The Service Party (TSP) leader also claimed that DP Ruto could be on his way out of the Jubilee Party.
“I am foreseeing a crumbling of Jubilee Party. Ruto will form his own party. TSP will join hands with DP’s new outfit, whether in the next government or the opposition,” he opined.
He went on to state on record that he had no qualms with President Uhuru Kenyatta over his dismissal from the Cabinet, adding that he was in full support of the Head of State for the remainder of his tenure.
In March, however, Kiunjuri accused the President of kicking him out of Cabinet despite his input in supporting his Jubilee party in the run-up to the 2017 general elections.
