South Africa: Today’s latest news and headlines, Monday 21 September

-

It’s a new week, and we’re in a new lockdown phase. Monday is the first day of Level 1 lockdown restrictions, but there’s plenty more happening on our shores over the next 24 hours. Here are all the major headlines for South Africa on Monday 21 September.

TODAY’S LATEST NEWS IN SOUTH AFRICA, Monday 21 September

First day of Level 1 in South Africa

Some six months after South Africa entered Level 5 restrictions, we’ve reached the other end of the lockdown pyramid. Level 1 is the lightest form of these regulations, but make no mistake – there are still plenty of rules to follow:

Mosimane vs Amakhosi

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane has taken a jab on Kaizer Chiefs, relating to the Soweto giants’ disastrous finish to the season. The Brazilians were crowned league champions for a third straight time after a little under half an hour at the top of the standings throughout the duration of the campaign.

Speaking on Power FM, Mosimane said Chiefs blew it despite being favoured by glaring errors from match officials.

“They had a 13 points gap and I have always said they benefited from some referees mistakes. I mean how many times did they benefit from referees’ mistakes this season. With all these benefits and 13 points, they blew it at the end and we capitalized to win it,” said the Sundowns coach.

“We dropped a lot of points during the bio bubble. Our first two matches were draws against Orlando Pirates and Highlands Park. We also lost against Cape Town City. But Chiefs were worse than us during the bubble.”

Brutal road traffic accidents in Limpopo, Mpumalanga

Nine people have died and three others were critically injured in two separate road accidents in Limpopo and Mpumalanga this weekend, paramedics said on Sunday. Seven people died and two others were critically injured when two cars collided head-on on the Matlala Road outside Polokwane in Limpopo in the early hours of Sunday morning, ER24 spokesman Ross Campbell said in a statement.

In the other accident, a 37-year-old man and a woman in her late 20s were killed and a second woman of about the same age was critically injured when the car they were travelling in veered out of control and crashed and rolled on the N4 near Witbank in Mpumalanga in the direction of Pretoria late on Friday night.

Not exactly a champagne crime…

Three men are expected to appear in court in Cape Town on Monday in connection with the hijacking and theft of a truck and its cargo of sparkling wine worth over R1 million (about US$61,000) this past week, the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Western Cape said on Sunday.

Detectives attached to the SAPS Western Cape organised crime and anti-hijacking unit are investigating a case of hijacking after a truck was hijacked on Thursday, September 17, at about 3pm on the corner of Owen and Halt roads in Elsies River in Cape Town, Western Cape SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana said in a statement.

South Africa COVID numbers for Monday 21 September

As of Sunday, the number of confirmed coronavirus (Covid-19) cases in South Africa was 661 211, with 1 555 new cases identified. The number of Covid-19-related deaths increased by 13, bringing the total to 15 953, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said.

Patricia de Lille in hot water

Patricia de Lille is once again facing calls for her head this weekend after the DA demanded that Cyril Ramaphosa ‘acts decisively’ against the Public Works minister for a string of alleged offences.

PDL denies the allegations against her, but a statement issued by the opposition on Sunday accuses ‘Aunty Pat’ of acting unlawfully in her position. A number of accusations have been against de Lille made by senior officials in her Department, which include the following:

  • Giving unlawful instructions to officials.
  • Orchestrating the constructive dismissal of officials.
  • Acting on purported ulterior motives in the termination of contract workers.
  • Interfering with numerous projects, including that of the Beitbridge border fence.
  • The DA also believes there should be charges of corruption, mismanagement, irregular procurement, and nepotism for Patricia de Lille to answer.
