Gautrain services suspended this weekend amid wage strike

If you were looking to make use of the Gautrain service this weekend, it’s safe to say that alternative transport arrangements need to be made. The Gautrain, on Friday 9 October, announced that it would not be in operation due to an ongoing wage strike.

According to the Gautrain, further wage negotiations between the Bombela Operating Company and the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) have not resolved the deadlock as some workers affiliated with the union remain on strike.

Discussions with Numsa resumed on 8 October and continued late on Friday evening with no agreement being reached between the parties.

“Due to the strike, trains will unfortunately not operate over this weekend as our contingency plans regrettably cannot currently support weekend operations,” it said in a brief statement.

“We, therefore, urge passengers to please make alternative transport arrangements for the weekend,” it added.

“We know that this will inconvenience some of our passengers and we apologise in advance for this. We wish to use this opportunity to thank our staff who have worked exceptionally hard over this past week to keep the service going. We thank them for their dedication and commitment.” it added.

On Sunday 4 October, Numsa announced that some of its members who work for the Gautrain would be on strike to highlight their demands from Monday 5 October.

“Our members will be on an indefinite strike until the Bombela Operating Company (BOC) engages us meaningfully on our demands. The BOC refuses to negotiate wages with us, they are simply imposing a 4% increase on our members, without engaging or negotiating with them. We are demanding a 8% increase in order to cushion the lowest paid worker who earns approximately R8 500 per month,” it said.

“We condemn attempts by the BOC to intimidate our members into backing down from the strike and backing down on their demands. They have been sending out letters to employees, trying to encourage them to resign from Numsa in an effort to block the strike,” it added.

Numsa said the management of Gautrain had an opportunity to engage but they refused.

“Instead they would rather jeopardize the livelihoods of thousands of commuters by provoking our members to strike, and refusing to sit around the table to negotiate,” it added. Protection Status
