Gov Kivutha Appointed Goodwill Ambassador

-

  • Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana has been appointed as a goodwill ambassador for the Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) on Friday, October 16, 2020.

In an event held in Nairobi, the organisation praised Governor Kivutha for his exemplary ideas and actions which helped lessen the spread of the virus in Makueni.

VSO is a development organisation that works through volunteers to fight poverty in developing countries.

Makueni County was also awarded in the VSO Covid-19 Recognition Awards, due to the effective mitigation measures.

“As the volunteer goodwill ambassador, I pledge my commitment to ensuring we broaden our stakeholder linkages,” Kivutha stated.

Makueni County had recorded less than 200 cases, compared to its neighbours Taita Taveta, Kitui, Machakos and Kajiado Counties.

While most governors opted for direct procurement, Makueni decided to undertake open tenders to promote transparency.

Makueni set aside Ksh45 million for Covid-19 from its own budget and received Ksh119 million from the national government.

The county government also received Ksh58 million from the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) for health workers’ allowances, Ksh30 million from the World Bank and Ksh7.4 million from Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA).

Details of the firms which were given tenders by the county government were also made public unlike other counties.

On a personal scale, the scaling down of operations due to coronavirus pandemic made the governor consider baking.

In a past testimony, he stated that his nine-year-old grandson challenged him to help bake a cake.

“He told me if I had managed to become a governor, then I could bake a cake. I had to rise to the occasion,” Kivutha intimated.
