‘A huge loss’: Professor Mohammad Karaan dies due to COVID-19

Former Dean of AgriSciences at Stellenbosch University Professor Mohammad Karaan sadly lost the battle with COVID-19 on Wednesday. Agri SA released a statement expressing sympathy to his family, friends, colleagues, and institutions where he worked. 

“May you find comfort in his legacy and humanity. He was indeed a well-loved and highly respected person,” it said. 

MOHAMMAD KARAAN LAUDED FOR HIS CONTRIBUTION 

Food for Mzansi reported that details surrounding Mohammad Karaan’s passing are still unknown but that the family confirmed his death was caused by a COVID-19-related illness. It also said he would be buried on Wednesday in line with Muslim practices.

Agri SA said its leaders had a recent meeting with the professor and there, agricultural issues were discussed in detail and ideas were enthusiastically exchanged to determine the best way forward for the sector. 

“Not only was he an expert who enjoyed great respect locally as well as internationally, but he also lived his passion for agriculture with conviction,” it said.  

“His contribution in many areas, especially regarding his involvement with the National Planning Commission, the establishment of ASUF (Agricultural Sector Unity Forum), the University of Stellenbosch and its Department of Agriculture and many other institutions, was invaluable,” it added.

Agri SA also extended its deepest sympathy to the families of the late former Minister Gerrit van Rensburg who represented Agri Western Cape in Agri SA’s General Council and the late Welmar Ras of the RSA Market Agency who was also involved with Agri SA’s Corporate Chamber. 

“We will cherish their memories with compassion,” it said. 

Western Cape Minister  of Agriculture Ivan Meyer took to Twitter and said the following; 

“Sad news that Prof Mohammed Karaan, Dean of the Faculty AgriSciences at Stellenbosch University has died due to Covid-19.  A huge loss for the agricultural and academic community in SA.  Another tree has fallen. His legacy and contribution will continue to inspire us.” 

Professional rugby player Schalk Burger said; 

“So sad to say RIP Prof Mohammad Karaan, President of Stellenbosch Rugby Club, condolences to all the family – will be fondly remembered. Prof Karaan had such an important role to play in the future of this country’s agriculture.” 

According to Food for Mzansi, he leaves behind his wife Basheerah and their five children; Zayne, Kamillah, Tauriq, Burhaan and Adam.
