Special schools could be allowed to reopen on voluntary basis

Published

The Department of Education is understood to be exploring whether to allow individual special schools to reopen if enough staff are willing to return on a voluntary basis.

However, sources told The Irish Times that there are concerns that such a move would be divisive and antagonise school staff unions.

Most stakeholders feel the fastest pathway towards reopening special education rests on building confidence among staff over the safety measures and seeing a decline in virus transmission rates in the community.

The Irish National Teachers’ Organisation (INTO) and Fórsa, the union which represents special needs assistants, resumed talks on Thursday with the Department of Education over reopening schools.

All sides have reaffirmed their commitment to the earliest possible resumption of services to school students with additional needs.

It follows the collapse of plans to reopen schools earlier this week amid rancour and acrimony.

Nothing rushed about special education reopening s…

While Minister for Education Norma Foley accused unions of rejecting public health advice that schools were safe environments, unions insisted the Government move to reopen schools was premature.

On Thursday, Ministers and the unions were keen to emphasise that they were willing to re-engage and work towards solutions.

INTO general secretary John Boyle said talks with the department were “constructive” and the union hoped to raise the reasonable concerns of members to find a route towards a “safe and orderly reopening”.

Fórsa said it shared the goals of the department in making in-school provision for students with special education needs available as soon as possible.

Iranian Army's Air Force enjoying unique UAV capabilities

“The Army’s Air Force has conducted all its missions perfectly so far, and today, it has turned into a unique power in the filed of UAVs and drones,” The top commander said during a visit to Air Force units in the southern city of Bandar Abbas on Thursday.

“The force has been developing its capabilities in all areas, including commanding and overhauls and building shelters,” Major General Mousavi said.

The Iranian Army’s Air Force has been following a series of plans to promote its combat capabilities, including employing drones, in addition to the regular manned jets.

Earlier in January, Admiral Mahmoud Mousavi, a high-ranking Army commander, said Iranian Army experts have dramatically increased the flight endurance of suicide UAVs, manufacturing drones with an operational range of 4,000 kilometers.

Iranian military technicians have in recent years made great headways in manufacturing a broad range of indigenous equipment, making the armed forces self-sufficient in the arms sphere.

Tehran has always assured other nations that its military might poses no threat to regional countries, saying that the Islamic Republic’s defense doctrine is entirely based on deterrence.

  • Tourism CS Najib Balala has explained why he appointed British Model, Naomi Campbell, as Magical Kenya International Tourism ambassador rather than the Kenyan award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o.

The CS explained his decision while addressing researches at the Kenyatta University on Thursday, January 21.

A section of Kenyans had opposed the idea while others reserved their opinions.

Balala alleged that Lupita’s managers blocked Tourism officials from accessing her and that the saga dragged on for five years.

“I know everybody is asking why not Lupita. Lupita has commitments and her managers cannot allow us to access her. We’ve spent the last five years looking for her,” Balala explained.

He added that Naomi Campbell was free and loved the idea of marketing Kenya.

The Ministry came up with a concept of how to work around Campbell and will unveil details on how she would be used to promote the industry.

Balala further defended his decision by saying that he had appointed other Kenyan celebrities such as Eliud Kipchoge as brand ambassadors.

Campbell, 50, praised the country’s improvement of infrastructure at the Coast including the upgrading of Malindi Airport to International standards adding that this would boost tourism in the region.

Kenya Tourism Federation Chair, Mohammed Hersi, disclosed that the model will not charge the Kenya Tourism Board for her services as Kenyans had assumed.

“If we were to pay Naomi, she would wipe a good chunk of our destination marketing budget. Those who think we paid millions to get her…I can bet we paid nothing

“When you reach Lupita’s level, agents run the show, they monetize every single move. Even the father who is Governor of Kisumu cannot use her image to promote the county,” he explained.
