Amakhosi have gone six league matches in total without a win and are yet to taste success at home having recorded three draws and one loss from their four home matches.
According to Backpage, Maritzburg United themselves ended a bleak run in build-up to this weekend’s fixture after recording their first win of the campaign last time out against Bloemfontein Celtic.
Not only was the victory The Team of Choice’s first in the league this season, it ended a 14-game drought dating back to the 2019/20 season.
ERNST MIDDENDORP COACHED CHIEFS LAST SEASON
Adding extra spice to the clash is that Maritzburg United are now coached by Ernst Middendorp who was let go by Amakhosi after the 2019/20 season.
Chiefs were pipped to the title on the final day of the season by Mamelodi Sundowns.

Gavin Hunt replaced Ernst Middendorp at Naturena and apart from success in the CAF Champions League, it’s been a dire start to their domestic campaign as they find themselves in a lowly 13th place in the standings after eight matches.
Amakhosi have picked up just seven points to date thanks to one win, four draws and three defeats.
They are already a yawning 14 points adrift of log leaders Sundowns, albeit having played one fewer match.
“The entire institution of Maritzburg United, stakeholders, fans and supporters were waiting for the first win. It was three points that were needed. It’s the beginning of the year and the first game which presented us with an opportunity to get connected to the rest of the pack.” said Middendorp.
CHIEFS AND MARITZBURG HAVE MET 28 TIMES PREVIOUSLY
In head-to-head stats, Kaizer Chiefs and Maritzburg United have met in 28 league matches since the 2005/06 campaign.
Amakhosi have claimed 13 wins compared to six for The Team of Choice, while nine matches have been drawn.
In home matches, Chiefs have recorded nine wins, two draws and three defeats in 14 matches played to date.
Maritzburg took four points off Chiefs in the teams’ league meetings last season, with a 1-1 draw at Harry Gwala Stadium in December 2019 and a 2-1 win at FNB Stadium in February 2020.

McCarthy warns of January clearout at Amazulu
Amazulu coach Benni McCarthy says that the club will look to strengthen in attack before the end of the month.
McCarthy claimed that as a result, players will be on their way out as Amazulu are not keen on maintaining an excessively large squad.
McCarthy to bring in new blood
Amazulu are reportedly eager to offload some of their younger players, although it is unclear if they will be loaned out, released or sold.
Somilia Ntsundwana, Andre De Jong, Mario Booysen are rumoured to be the players who could leave in the next two weeks.
“We need to stop drawing the games we should be winning, so we are looking at attacking options out there. We are looking to strengthen and definitely players will be leaving AmaZulu FC this time,” McCarthy said.
“Yes of course we don’t want deprive or stop players from getting game-time and that, so yeah we have a great squad and will be looking at offloading some players, give them an opportunity to play elsewhere you know.
“We are also looking at a few possibilities where we can strengthen because as good and solid as the team is, we can do with some top quality players, one or two coming in to strengthen the squad even more to be tougher to beat.”
Amazulu went on a spending spree at the outset of the season in a bid to secure a top-eight finish for the club’s new owners.
Usuthu head into their clash with SuperSport United occupying tenth spot on the log but some of their star players have called for patience.
Amazulu fans need to be patient
Former Orlando Pirates man Luvuyo Memela is one of the players who have made an impact, scoring six goals so far this term.
“Mindset, we are ready for the game, we know we need to get three points, but what is important is to focus on ourselves and give the same performances we produced in the past games even though we didn’t take our chances,” Memela said.
“Make sure we convert them and get maximum points, but playing SuperSport United, you can’t go there with no respect and thinking it’s going to be an easy game because it won’t be easy.
“We know it’s all because of this pandemic, but what is important is showing them on the pitch that we want to win the game and stay consistent,” Memela added.
“We need them even though they can’t be with us in the stadiums. We need to win games for them and urge them to be patient with us.”

Ncikazi wary of Buccaneers backlash
“Tough match and tough opponents. Pirates are a good team‚ a ball playing team. Maybe let’s not read anything from the previous result.”Ncikazi told members of the media.
“Just remember the positives, that the only threat with them is that they can change the formation many times in one match and also the personnel. Orlando Pirates have speed and quality players.
“So I’m not sure what will happen after they lost to Black Leopards, whether they’ll change personnel‚ whether they’ll change the formation. This makes it tricky to face Pirates right now.”
