Patrice Motsepe moves a step closer to CAF presidency

Published

on

Patrice Motsepe’s bid for the Confederation of African Football (CAF) presidency has been deemed admissible.

As much was confirmed by the African football governing body this week.

MOTSEPE WAS AMONG 5 CANDIDATES FOR THE ROLE

The Mamelodi Sundowns president was among five candidates who officially stood after being endorsed by various federations around the continent to succeed incumbent Ahmad Ahmad.

Motsepe, a mining magnate and reportedly South Africa’s third-richest person, had his candidacy for the role approved and supported by the South Africa Football Association (SAFA) in November last year.

Other federations to have backed Motsepe include Botswana, Ivory Coast, Nigeria and Sierra Leone.

Following Ahmad’s FIFA ban, the Malagasy was deemed ineligible for the upcoming elections while the Governance Committee has cleared Motsepe and Ahmed Yahya from Mauritania after meeting at the CAF headquarters this week.

The meeting in Cairo, convened by president Michel Kizito Brizoua-Bi resulted, in the duo being deemed ‘admissible’ to stand for African football’s top job.

CAF SAID FURTHER CHECKS WILL BE DONE

However, in a statement released by CAF, both Motsepe and Yahya will undergo further checks before a final decision is made.

“Their candidatures were deemed admissible. However, the committee considered that further checks are necessary before a final decision. To this end, a hearing of these candidates will be organised in Cairo on 28 January 2021,” read the statement.

SHOULD MOTSEPE WIN, HE WILL STAND FOR 4 YEARS

Augustin Emmanuel Senghor, the president of the Senegal FA, and Ivorian FA president Jacques Bernard Daniel Anouma are the only other names authorised to appear on the list of candidates after the committee ruling.

CAF will elect Ahmad’s successor as well as a new executive committee at the 43rd Elective Ordinary General Assembly on March 12 in Rabat, Morocco.

The new president will stand for a four-term period.

Should Patrice Motsepe win the election, he would have to step down from his role as president of 10-time PSL winners, Sundowns.

Entering the match unbeaten and at the top of the log, Steve Komphela’s men weren’t expected to struggle against a Black Leopards side in 15th-place in the standings.

However, it was Lidoda Duvha who took the lead at the Thohoyandou Stadium in Limpopo in the 46th minute through Zimbabwean midfielder Ovidy Karuru.

Mamelodi Sundowns levelled matters in the 64th minute through Namibian defender Peter Shalulile.

However, things took a turn for the worse for the 10-time league winners when in the 66th minute striker Mothobi Mvala was given his marching orders.

Displaying their championship pedigree, and despite their numerical disadvantage, Mamelodi Sundowns were able to find a winner deep into extra-time to break Black Leopards’ hearts.

Shalulile was the man to score the winner, picking up a brace of goals on the day.

The win moved Mamelodi Sundowns three points clear of SuperSport United and Swallows FC in the standings.

For the Brazilians the victory broke a streak of three consecutive draws in the league.

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS NEXT PLAY CHIPPA UNITED

Mamelodi Sundowns, meanwhile, will next be in action on Sunday, 31 January against Chippa United.

Meanwhile, Tuesday’s only other scheduled match in the DStv premiership between Bloemfontein Celtic and Chippa United was postponed to a yet-to-be-determined date due to inclement weather.

Mamelodi Sundowns are back in action this afternoon when they visit Black Leopards at the Thohoyandou stadium in the DStv Premiership.

Despite being on a three game winless streak in the DStv Premiership, Mamelodi Sundowns are still leading the log standings albeit on goal difference. SuperSport United and Swallows FC are breathing down the Brazilian’s necks and a win today will be vital.

Black Leopards on the other hand find themselves in the relegation zone. To add to their misery, they’ve been dealt yet another coaching blow after Dylan Kerr was sacked earlier this week. Follow all of the live action below.

Kerr sacking has affected the players – Ndlovu

“Of course it’s a sad story that we lost our coach, you know we were very close to him so it has affected the players a bit,” Black Leopards goalkeeper King Ndlovu told Kick-Off ahead of this afternoon’s clash against Mamelodi Sundowns.

“But we have to quickly adjust to the new coach’s strategies and it’s not a lot of changes because Coach Seema is a coach that likes to play. So I don’t think there’s a big difference in the way we play because we are a team that plays the ball on the ground.

“So I think that is still here. So ja, but we are still saddened by the loss of a coach you know, but life must go on. It’s important for us to get some sort of result.”

The Brazilians, who are still unbeaten this season, will be looking to keep their unblemished record intact when they travel to Limpopo to take on Black Leopards at the Thohoyandou Stadium on Tuesday, 27 January.

Kick-off is at 17:00.

“In relation to what we are expecting, the preparations have gone very well. We just came from a difficult match against Swallows FC and now we are travelling to Venda which is energy-consuming. We have prepared for this game as they are a difficult side to face, they are fighting to keep their premiership profile,” coach Rulani Mokwena said ahead of the encounter.

The last time Masandawana played Lidoda Duvha was one of the biggest days in the history of the club as they secured an unprecedented 10th PSL league title in last season’s ‘bio-bubble’.

In some good injury news for Mamelodi Sundowns, they are set to welcome back star midfielder Andile Jali for the clash.

Jali has missed the last two matches for Mamelodi Sundowns due to injury.

However, the Brazilians are still nursing several injuries concerns in their camp.

Ricardo Nascimento, Brian Onyango and Mauricio Affonso are all still sidelined with an assortment of injuries.

While Mamelodi Sundowns are top of the standings along with SuperSport United and Swallows FC, Black Leopards are struggling down in 15th place.

They are only ahead of bottom side TTM thanks to a marginally superior goal difference.
