It is reported that the form three student sneaked into Mugumo Girls High School and gave his girlfriend a cigarette lighter which was used to torch the dormitory that had a capacity of 220 students.
According to the police commander, Gichugu sub-county, Anthony Mbogo, the male student was arrested at Kimunye village, Kirinyaga County.
The police boss indicated that the student was also involved in Kamama Boys strike that led to the destruction of property of unknown value.
“His parent told us Kamama Boys in Embu was closed last week after students destroyed school property,” Mbogo said.
Mugumo Girls arson attack took place on Sunday February 14, around 2 pm to 3 pm when the rest of the students were studying.
On Friday, February 19, nine girls were arrested in connection with the torching of the dormitory and taken to Kianyaga police station. The Police Commander revealed that the girls mentioned the suspect’s name.
“Some students who are being held here at Kianyaga Police Station mentioned the suspect and they have agreed to be State witnesses,’ Mbogo added.
Mbogo also said that the police force is also looking for another student who accompanied the suspect to Mugumo Girls.
The other girls who will not be state witnesses were held at the Kianyaga police station and will be arraigned at the Gichugu Law Courts on Monday, February 22, where they will face arson charges.
Kirinyaga County Commissioner warned students burning school property saying that the government will treat unruly students as criminals.
In January, Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha directed school administrators and principals not to admit students expelled from other schools due to indiscipline.
