Angie Motshekga on matric results: ‘I’m relieved’
Minister Angie Motshekga announced on Monday, 22 February 2021, that the class of 2020 had achieved a 767.2% pass rate. Motshekga said while she was not happy about the fact that the matric pass rate saw a more than 5% drop from the previous year, she felt relieved as she had actually expected far worse.
“I do feel relieved, we have learnt a lot and I think those lessons are going to help us moving forward and make us stronger. I would have wished for more but I am relieved,” she said.
Motshekga has lauded stakeholders for their support during the COVID-19 pandemic, which certainly made learning challenging for pupils.
More than one million pupils sat down for the matric examinations in 2020.
The 2020 matric examinations were marred by the leaking of the Mathematics and Physical Sciences question papers. This prompted the Department of Basic Education to order a rewrite of both exams, however the decision was then reversed after Afriforum and the South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) approached the courts
