Safa CEO Tebogo Motlanthe has insisted that the Africa Cup of Nations Cup qualifier will be held in Johannesburg as planned.
Bafana Bafana vs Ghana will go ahead in Johannesburg
Motlanthe’s declaration comes as reports emerged that Ghana may have requested the fixture be moved to a neutral venue over coronavirus fears.
Safa say they have open lines of communication with Ghana’s football authorities and have received no indication of any fears or concerns.
“To put it on the record‚ I have been talking to the secretary of the Ghana FA where we were discussing this important match between us and them in South Africa.
“Nobody has at any stage mentioned that the Ghana FA doesn’t want to play in SA‚ it’s only the media‚” said Motlanthe.
“The match between Bafana Bafana and Ghana is going to take place at Soccer City at 6pm on March 25 and we have received all communication from Caf to this effect.
“I don’t want to comment on hearsay and please don’t refer me to a certain website which you are seeing for the first time. The problems with South Africans is that we want to believe whatever news we come across.”
Motlanthe claims that Ghana’s FA have, to his knowledge, made not request to have the match moved.
“I ask anyone to say give me a letter from Caf to Safa stating that Ghana wants to move the match. Ghana may stand up and say that this is fake news because we have never received any complaint from Ghana to this regard.”
Caf club competitions have been hit hard by the refusal of visas to teams from certain countries, including the barring of Kaizer Chiefs from entering Morocco, and have also seen a Tanzanian team quarantined upon entry into Angola.
The Bafana Bafana squad for their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier will be announced later this week.
Bafana can move ahead of Ghana and to the top of their group if they are able to bag all three. Ghana beat South Africa in their earlier group stage encounter but the Black Stars suffered an upset defeat to Sudan away from home that has left them level on points with Bafana Bafana.
