Benni McCarthy says he can’t remember if Siphiwe Tshabalala will be axed

The AmaZulu future of veteran midfielder Siphiwe Tshabalala remains unclear after coach Benni McCarthy claimed he “couldn’t remember” if “Shabba’s” named was on the list of players to be axed.

It seems highly unlikely that McCarthy forgot whether the 36-year-old former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana legend would be staying – or going.

Siphiwe Tshabalala joined Usuthu at the beginning of the season as one of their marquee signings by president Sandile Zungu and former coach Ayanda Dlamini.

However, three months into the current DStv Premiership season and Siphiwe Tshabalala is yet to featured under McCarthy, who himself was signed by the club earlier in the season.

When asked, McCarthy could not (or would not) confirm whether Siphiwe Tshabalala was among the players set to released.

“To be honest with you I can’t remember the list [of players to be offloaded] because I’ve done the list from the first week or two, I don’t have a list in front of me to know which players were on that list,” McCarthy told the media.

“For me it’s also for respect for players that you don’t want to make it public, so I’m looking to offload players because working with a big squad is just frustrating and hard, and you don’t get out the best of the players.

“You can’t focus on every player because the squad is too big, the quality gets missing because you can’t pay attention to details.

“So yeah there’s a big list of players that asked to be released to seek opportunities and that is true, but the names I can’t disclose with you.”

Somila Ntsundwana, Sibusiso Magaqa and Ntuthuko Madela have already joined other clubs in recent weeks.

AmaZulu are currently seventh in the DStv Premiership at the halfway mark of their season.

Their next match will be in the Nedbank Cup Round of 32 against Golden Arrows on Saturday, 6 February at 17:00.

Their next DStv Premiership commitment is against high-flying Swallows FC on Sunday, February 14 at 15:30.

One waits to see whether Siphiwe Tshabalala will feature in either of those clashes.

Question: Should Siphiwe Tshabalala leave AmaZulu before he’s axed or does he have a future at the club?
