Brother blues: Police bust siblings for transporting alcohol, bribery | Muhabarishaji News

Police on patrol in Welkom, Free State, stopped a vehicle that was transporting beer from a liquor shop. When authorities discovered the contraband, the suspect asked to call his brother who later showed up and attempted to bribe the arresting officers. The siblings were subsequently arrested.

The Welkom Public Order Police were conducting routine patrols in the area when they received a tip-off about a suspect transporting alcohol in a blue vehicle with a Free State license plate on Tuesday, 20 July.

According to South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson BrigadierMotantsi Makhele, the police officers spotted the vehicle in question and followed it until it came to a halt next Jabula Wholesale in Muizen Street, Welkom.

“Permission was asked to search the vehicle and 12 cases of beer were found,” said Makhele. “The driver was alone and he is the owner of a bottle store.”

The beer was allegedly being transported from the suspect’s establishment to a party in the Welkom area. The suspect was arrested for transporting alcohol during Alert Level 4.

The suspect’s brother was also arrested after he was summoned to the scene and attempted to bribe the arresting officers – Constable Patrick Mpempe and his team of Public Order Police – with R3000 in cash.

The siblings – aged 50 and 44 – are expected to appear in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court imminently.
