Oh boy! It’s not just Gareth Cliff who’s catching some heat on Twitter for his controversial racism debate – South Africans are now gunning for Nandos. The restaurant chain sponsored the broadcast on Cliff Central, Cliff’s online radio station.

In case you missed it: Cliff, Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen and One South Africa Movement member Mudzuli Rakhivhane were talking about the Phoenix posters which sparked furore just recently. The DA caught fire for putting up its posters which read: “The ANC calls you racists, the DA calls you heroes.”  – this is in reference to the violence which broke out in the area back in July.

A clip from the conversation was shared on Twitter by Rakhivhane  which quickly led to Cliff topping the Twitter Trends list because of a remark he made in the video which Tweeps found “racist”.

“The IRR [Institute of Race Relations] has shown us endless reports of people who say that racism is at the bottom of their list of priorities,” said Cliff.

Rakhivhane then replied by saying, “They obviously don’t experience the type of racism I experience on a daily basis.”

“Your personal experience is completely anecdotal and unimportant to all of us, sorry,” Cliff replied.

Nandos responds to fury over Gareth Cliff debate

Now South Africans are coming for Nandos, swearing never to eat at any of its restaurants again. The eatery, famous for its spicy grilled chicken, is also known for its marketing and incorporating current affairs in its campaigns. It has responded to Cliff’s controversial debate and says it is taking the matter under review.
