Newcastle United and Premier League legend, Alan Shearer has insisted that Chelsea are bound to win the English Premier League title this season.

Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea side, who have won four and drew one of their five league games so far, will battle title holders, Manchester City on Sunday.

The Blues are currently leading the way at the top of the table and Shearer, a former Newcastle striker, still has the London side as the team to win the league.

“City have dropped the most points out of the main contenders so far,” he told the BBC.

“And Saturday’s home draw with Southampton was a poor result for them when you consider Liverpool’s performance against Crystal Palace, United’s win and particularly what Chelsea did at Spurs.

“It will be between those four sides come the end of the season, but I will stick with what I said in the summer: Chelsea are the team to beat.

“The Premier League title race is only just getting started, but Chelsea already look like they will be very hard to stop.

“Thomas Tuchel’s side look seriously impressive right now, but they have done since he took charge in January.

“Even when they are not playing well or things go wrong – like it did when Reece James was sent off at Anfield last month – Chelsea still give very little away.

“As they showed in their brilliant 3-0 win at Tottenham on Sunday, the Blues have an extremely strong squad and a very good manager too.”

However, Ibezim Godswill, a die-hard Manchester United fan, has chided Shearer, saying that the Premier League legend is too hasty with his prediction.

According to Godswill, the season is just starting and people should not be too fast to write off teams such as Manchester United, Liverpool and even Manchester City.

Speaking to Muhabarishaji in reaction to Shearer’s prediction, Godswill said, “Shearer is an authority as far as Premier League is concerned no doubt. He is a legend and I respect his opinions.

“Having said that, Shearer and the other former Premier League stars, such as Roy Keane and Gary Neville should not be in a haste to make predictions after just five games into the new season. They’re forgetting that Chelsea are just topping the table due to their head-to-head advantage over Liverpool and their superior goal difference over Manchester United.

“As a football legend, Shearer should understand that injuries and fatigue may set in later on in the season and teams will start getting results they never expected.

“Yes, Thomas Tuchel’s side are good in all departments at this point but don’t forget that Manchester United have the best player in the world [Cristiano Ronaldo] in their dressing room this season.”
