The police in the Eastern Cape said a 26-year-old father was arrested on Wednesday morning, 22 September, for allegedly beating his 10-month-old child to death. The suspect reportedly could not handle the child’s crying and assaulted the baby before chasing the mother away. The next day, the mother found the child’s dead body and alerted the police.

FATHER ARRESTED FOR KILLING CHILD

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said the 26-year-old man accused of killing his child is from Bethelsdorp.

“It is alleged that on Tuesday, 21 September 2021, at about 19:00, the mother of the child and the baby went to the child’s father’s house in Langdon Street in Ext 36 in Bethelsdorp,” said Naidu.

At the father’s house, the child allegedly cried continuously and he could not tolerate it. According to the police, the mother explained that the baby boy might be experiencing cramps. Despite this, the father allegedly assaulted the child before chasing the mother away and keeping the baby with him.

At approximately 6:00 on Wednesday morning, the mother went back to the father’s house to look for her child and found the deceased’s dead body on the bed. “She took him to her house and alerted the police,” said Naidu.

At approximately 10:00, detectives stationed in Bethelsdorp arrested the father at his house and he is being detained on a charge of murder.

He is expected to appear before the Gqeberha Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 27 September.
