Harry Kane’s unwanted statistic vs Palace

Tottenham endured a miserable return to Premier League action on Saturday afternoon, slumping to a 3-0 defeat away to Crystal Palace.

While Spurs’ cause was not helped by a second yellow card for defender Japhet Tanganga before the hour mark, with all three goals coming thereafter, it was a performance characterised by a lack of creativity and a blunt attack.

And one shocking stat has emerged following the match that truly reflects that.

For the first time in his Premier League career, Harry Kane had neither a shot nor even a single touch of the ball inside the opposition penalty area in a match where he completed the full 90 minutes, per Opta.

Spurs boss Nuno Espirito Santo’s diamond formation failed to supply the England captain with anywhere near enough opportunities, with a midfield of Harry Winks, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Oliver Skipp and Dele Alli proving uninspired and forced to do more defensive work than attacking.

It wasn’t all down to them, though, with Kane himself looking a little sluggish following the international break with England. The striker played the full 90 minutes as the Three Lions were held to a 1-1 draw in Poland on Wednesday night.

Spurs’ lack of alternative to their talisman was laid bare once again as Kane was forced to start for his club in Saturday’s early kick off. The situation was also exacerbated by an injury to Son Heung-min, who missed the trip to Palace and is also a doubt for the clash with Chelsea next weekend.

Tanganga’s red card on 58 minutes paved the way for a Tottenham collapse, with Wilfried Zaha converting a penalty after Ben Davies handled in the box, before substitute Odsonne Edouard came on to net a clinical brace.

The result brings an abrupt end to Tottenham’s 100% start to the season, with the small matter of a visit from Thomas Tuchel’s Blues to come next Sunday.
