Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has reassured supporters that he ‘will be back on the pitch soon,’ as he continues his recovery from a calf injury sustained against Aston Villa prior to the international break.

The 28-year-old missed England’s set of World Cup 2022 qualifiers in October, having been ruled out of the clashes after pulling up injured on September 25. He limped off the field with a calf injury, and it was soon revealed that he would miss ‘a few weeks’ of action.

Maguire has been afforded the international break to step up his recovery, and while his return to the pitch remains a little way off, he is in high spirits over his progress. Speaking about the knock, the England international admitted he has yet to train with his teammates, but will be ‘back soon’.

“Yeah it’s getting there,” Maguire began.

“I still haven’t trained yet with the squad, but I am getting better, I am progressing as I should be. It is obviously a frustrating injury for me to get, but I am progressing and I will be back on the pitch soon.”

Man Utd travel to Leicester City on Saturday, but they’ll have to do so without their captain, who won’t be able to make a mark against his former club.

The Red Devils then face a complicated Champions League tie with Atalanta, before testing themselves against Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City.

The Manchester derby is followed by another international break, and all eyes will be on Maguire, and when he will slot into the backline. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is already facing the dilemma of naming a makeshift back four for the trip to Leicester, after Maguire’s partner Raphael Varane also returned to Carrington with an injury.

The Frenchman picked up a groin injury while on Nations League duty, and had to be substituted during the first half of France’s 2-1 victory over Spain in the final.
