Kaizer Chiefs striker Leonardo Castro cannot wear a protective mask yet and will therefore play no part in the team’s CAF Champions League match against Horoya AC on Saturday.

Kick-off in Conakry is at 9PM SA time.

Castro was left out of the Amakhosi 18-man squad due to a nose injury – and this means Gavin Hunt will travel to Guinea without a proven goalscorer, especially because Samir Nurkovic is suspended for the encounter.

Castro’s exclusion led to a number of questions directed at Chiefs but the club responded on Instagram that the lanky marksman is unable to wear the protective mask because he’s yet to undergo surgery.

“We know that device but is really for post operation protection not pre op… it also depends on the type of break… pretty sure you will see him wearing it in the future,” said Chiefs in response to a question from one fan.

Castro was supposed to make his 100th Amakhosi appearance on Saturday, but that milestone will be put on hold until he is back from injury.

He remains one of Amakhosi’s most trusted strikers under the tutelage of Hunt but injuries have hampered his progress this season.

Castro has managed just five goals in 26 competitive matches this season without providing any assist.

Overall, Castro has scored 26 goals in 99 matches since joining the Glamour Boys from Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2018.
