• Friends of the late Agnes Wanjiru, who was allegedly killed by a British soldier at a hotel in Nanyuki town in 2012, have revealed last moments before she went missing.

Florence Nyaguthii and Susan Nyambura narrated that Wanjiru was in the company of two white men at the hotel, when she was last seen.

The duo added that the 21-year-old had walked in the bar at 11pm and a potential client bought her beer before they left together.

The next day, however, she did not show up at the club, prompting her friends to ask guards about her whereabouts.

“A guard said he heard a fight in one of the rooms. There was a loud bang, and later they realised a window had been broken,” Nyaguthii told the Nation.

It was only after two months had lapsed that her body was found dumped in a septic tank in the hotel’s compound, following a foul smell.

Autopsy results showed that Wanjiru died of multiple stab wounds to her chest and abdomen.

According to the Sunday Times, four soldiers revealed that the suspected officer had told them of the stabbing and shown them the body on the fateful night.

“She was in the tank. He took me to the tank and lifted it up, and I looked in and I just remember seeing her in there. My heart sank. My mind just went blank.

“The only thing I could say to him was: ‘I’ll never forgive you for this,” explained one of the soldiers.

The whistleblowers noted that their attempts to raise the matter to their superiors had been futile. The authorities allegedly kept the matter under wraps in a bid to maintain UK’s relationship with Kenya.
