A Limpopo policeman is in serious bother. He could turn from cop to inmate. The 39-year-old allegedly gave drugs and alcohol to inmates at a Phalaborwa police station on New Year’s Eve.

According to the report, the suspect has been suspended after allegedly providing dagga and alcohol to inmates inside the holding cells at the Phalaborwa police station.

It is further reported that the inmates, once intoxicated, allegedly committed some rather grave crimes.

It is believed the inmates raped and seriously assaulted other inmates.

“Six counts of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH) and two counts of rape were opened,” said police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo as quoted by News24.

“Two suspects, aged 23 and 39 – one in custody for murder and the other for robbery – were subsequently… charged with rape and assault GBH.”

The Limpopo policeman, whether guilty or not, has at this moment, greatly embarrassed the South African Police Service (SAPS) badge.

The province’s police commissioner Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe, has said the charges against the cop suspect will be dealt with internally.

“What happened at Phalaborwa police station was an isolated incident, which is being internally dealt with to ensure that decisive and appropriate sanctions are ultimately meted out again the said member,” said Hadebe.

Meanwhile, the inmates appeared at the Phalaborwa Magistrate’s Court last Friday, where the case was swiftly moved to 18 January.
