Lionel Messi to miss PSG’s clash with Angers through injury

Lionel Messi will miss Paris Saint-Germain’s clash with Angers on Wednesday due to inflammation in his Achilles tendon.

The 34-year-old has been far from his prolific best this season, registering just three goals in Ligue 1 following his stunning summer move from Barcelona. Messi has, however, flourished in more of a playmaking role, and has 13 assists to his name in the league.

Runaway Ligue 1 leaders PSG will clinch the title on Wednesday if they win and second-placed Marseille fail to beat Nantes, but Messi won’t play any part in the game after the club confirmed in a short statement that he has an Achilles problem.

“Messi is receiving treatment for an inflammation in his left Achilles tendon. He will be looked at again in 48 hours’ time.” the statement read.

Should PSG and Marseille both win, Les Parisiens’ next opportunity to secure the title will come on Saturday against Lens. For Mauricio Pochettino, the club’s under pressure manager, the title win can’t come soon enough, with the Argentine suggesting as much in his latest pre-match press conference.

“For the moment, the title is not secured yet, we are focused on the trip to Angers and on winning. The sooner the better,” Pochettino remarked. “Personally, it would be an immense joy to win this 10th French Championship title for Paris Saint-Germain. Motivation is always there because it is necessary to win.

“We have to respect football and our opponents until the last day because that is the best way to perform well. We hope to win the title as soon as possible,” he added.

As for Messi, it’s unclear just how long he will be out of action for – his 21 appearances for PSG in the league to date comfortably the fewest he’s made in a season since 2005/06.
