    South Africa’s Gary Player joined Jack Nicklaus in hitting ceremonial tee shots to get the 85th Masters under way earlier on Thursday, 8 April.

    As has been custom since 1963, the duo hit shots off the first tee 15 minutes ahead of the official start of the tournament at Augusta National.

    Player won the Masters on three occasions – 1961, 1974 and 1978 – while Nicklaus is a six-time Masters winner.

    They were joined on the tee by Lee Elder, the first black golfer to take part in the Masters in 1975.
