Nashville SC have completed the signing of free agent midfielder Sean Davis, the club announced on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old midfielder arrives in Tennessee on a three-year contract with a club option through the 2025 season.

Davis head previously spent his entire career with the New York Red Bulls, signing his first homegrown contract ahead of the 2015 season having come through the academy system. In all, he made 208 appearances for the club – second only to Bradley Wright-Phillips (240) and Luis Robles (281) – winning two Supporters’ Shield titles and captaining the Red Bulls.

“Sean is a tremendous leader who contributes so much on and off the field,” Nashville general manager Mike Jacobs said in an official club release. “He has the ability to impact games on both sides of the ball, and we are so excited to add him to our group.”

The deal sees Nashville bring in one of the most valuable players on the MLS free-agent market, with Davis adding even more experience to Gary Smith’s midfield alongside Dax McCarty and Anibal Godoy.

Davis is best known for his relentless work rate and defensive capabilities. The three-time USMNTmidfielder made more tackles (146) than any other player in MLS in 2021, while he ranked first among Red Bulls players for pressures (683), interceptions (95), and recoveries (480).

Davis also completed more passes (1,214) and progressive passes (190) for the Red Bulls and will offer Nashville extra ball security in midfield.

Nashville – who are switching to the Western Conference for the 2022 campaign following the arrival of Charlotte FC – have been a huge success in MLS so far, making the Playoffs in each of their first two campaigns.

The Tennessee club have profited most from signing MLS veterans and using their experience and know-how to see out games and pick up results against the odds. This season, they reached the Eastern Conference semi-finals before losing to the Philadelphia Union on penalties.

Nashville begin their 2022 campaign away at the Seattle Sounders on February 28.
