Paramedics said the security guard who was shot and injured during an armed robbery at the Gateway Shopping Centre earlier this week has died.
Emer-G-Med spokesperson Kyle van Reenen confirmed the news on Friday evening.
“Sad to report the security officer we attended to at Gateway with the GSW post-armed robbery earlier this week has passed away.
“Condolences to the entire team at Ensure and his loved ones.”
The robbery took place on Wednesday.

According to Reaction Uaret SA spokesperson Prem Balr. Wehey have received multiple calls since 14:32 on Wednesday from shoppers reporting the robbery in progress.
“Several frantic callers informed the controller on duty, and that at least fifteen suspects had robbed Damjee Jewellers and NWJ.”

He said all available Reaction Officers and RUSA Medics were dispatched to the scene.
“On arrival, it was established that a Security Officer was shot in the parking lot. He is in a critical condition and is currently (15:12) being stabilised by Paramedics from a private ambulance service.”
“According to shoppers, the gunmen fired multiple shots during the robbery. Several spent 9mm, and rifle cartridges were recovered in the mall.
“The robbers are believed to have fled in a white Toyota Corolla and a white Mazda bakkie.”
Police could not yet confirm if anyone had been arrested yet.
Meanwhile, the Gateway Shopping Centre confirmed the robbery.
“One of our security guards was injured and attended to by paramedics. The South African Police Services (SAPS) were notified and responded to the scene soon after.
“The perpetrators made off with an undisclosed amount of goods. The safety and security of customers and tenants is of utmost importance to us, we are working closely with the SAPS to assist with their investigation.”
It added that that the centre has been secured and trading as normal.
